Abstract
In [Theocr.] XXIII a story of love and death unfolds, very interesting for the sequence of sensations and emotions it presents. In an epic-bucolic context woven with literary plots subjected to an intense and creative rewriting and destined to be imitated (Ov. Met. XIV 698-764), descriptions of various levels are grafted, which dig into the emotional universe, revealing analytical and cultural depth. The article will analyze: sensations that pass through taste (πικρὰ, ἁλμυρὰ, ἁδύ), touch ( ἄγριος, στυγνός, ἀπηνής, ἀτειρής), sight (δεινόν); primary emotions: fear (θὴρ ὑλαῖος); hate (μισέω) 3. affective states ( (χολή, ὕβρις, ὀργή, ἐρεθίζoμαι); an excessive and sudden emotion as ferocious anger. For the author of Id. XXIII it was the result of an emotional process, to be analyzed and explained in its psychophysical components. This process of ‘defining’ and ‘translating’ emotions into thoughts involves finding words to define individual states of mind.
