Abstract

In Homer, in the only passage where writing is mentioned, the signs that Preto engraves
on a tablet are called θυμοφθόρα (Iliad 6, 169). The purpose of this article is to show what
Homer means with this metaphor and which emotions accompany the act of writing and reading
in this first testimony of writing in Greek literature. The article concludes with a comparison with
the emotional power of words in the novel Greek lesson (2011) by the Korean writer Han Kang.
